Easy, pretty and fun to make, these Christmas decorations will not only add the homemade feel to your Christmas tree but give the family a lovely treat over the festive period.
• Beat together 100g soft brown sugar and 100g unsalted butter or margarine until pale and fluffy.
• Add in two eggs and one dessertspoon of honey. Beat the mixture until thoroughly blended.
• Sift 300g plain flour into the bowl and add one teaspoon of ground spice and one teaspoon of cinnamon.
• Mix it until you have a dough. Leave it in the bowl, cover and put in the fridge to chill for at least half an hour.
• Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface, to just less than half a centimetre thickness. Cut into festive shapes – stars, trees, angels – but nothing too fiddly that will break easily.
• With a knife, gently make a hole at the top of each shape (not too close to the edge or it might break once cooked).
• Place each shape on a lightly greased baking tray.
• Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at gas mark 3 (170°C or 325°F). When cooked, the biscuits should feel firm but remember they will harden a little more when they are cooling on a rack.
• Decorate with white icing patterns and silver balls, or with whatever your kids think looks pretty
from your baking cupboard. Thread a little ribbon through each decoration to hang on your tree.
The little ribbons inside new clothes that are used to hang them up are perfect for this job as they are thin and come in different colours.
