Alternative family pets Not every home has room for a dog, so what other interesting companions are there?

Many children long for a dog or cat but it might not be right for your home life. Here are some ideas for meeting your child’s wishes half-way.

Something small
Gerbils and goldfish are relatively inexpensive and hassle-free – and they can live in your child’s bedroom where you’ll never need to see them. Make sure your child signs a written contract to fulfil cage/tank-cleaning duties though!

Something wacky
A Venus fly trap is a plant, not an animal – but the fact that it has a ‘mouth’ and needs to be fed live flies could be enough to satisfy your child’s zoo-keeping tendencies.

Garden pets
Establish a frog pond, buy an ant colony, or invest in a wormery (these can be lots of fun and ecologically-friendly).

‘Borrow’ a dog
Offer to take your neighbour’s dog for walks a couple of times a week, or get to know someone with a cat that your family can take care of when they are away.

Petting zoos and local farms
There are dozens of inner city farms and petting zoos across the country – where your children can stroke and cuddle fluffy creatures to their hearts’ content.

Savvy tip
Many reptiles have very specific habitat and dietary needs, and some may harbour salmonella. Seek specialist help before you buy a reptile, and opt for something like a gecko as these tend to be more tame, and won’t grow to such a big size.

Pass it on – a great idea for animal lovers
Many urban farms or community gardens are keen to recruit older children as they always need voluntary help. Plus your child will learn new skills. Find a farm near you at www.farmgarden.org.uk.
