Capsule packing for family holidays
Keep your luggage to a minimum and you can enjoy your break from the minute you leave home
Beachwear
• Beyond swimming kit, a pair of Bermuda shorts that can go in the sea or be worn around town will be versatile. Pick light cottons or UV-protective fabrics (available at high street stores) as these rinse and dry out easily.
• If you are treating yourself to one new holiday item make it a sarong or a large, pretty scarf that can turn your swimwear into something just dressy enough to get you from hotel to beach and becomes a shawl over daywear if it gets chilly.
Daywear
• Even if you aren’t self-catering there is usually a laundry facility – use it, instead of taking two weeks’ clothes.
• Pick the three most comfortable, favourite outfits for each person then add in two more tops that will match these to extend your options.
• If you’re worried about the odd bad weather day, take two long-sleeved tops that can go on top of each other or be worn separately rather than packing jumpers.
• If needed, only pack light raincoats. You won’t need anything heavier – on holiday you can change your plans instead of having to brave the storm!
Posh gear
• Family holidays are rarely about fine dining. Remembering to brush everyone’s hair after a day on the beach is more important than gladrags.
• Take one cotton jersey dress that suits days out but which can be instantly smartened with a small cardigan or a light blouse over your shoulders for evening. One smart shirt that suits any trousers and doesn’t need a tie will be enough for men.
• For kids, one favourite shirt or dress will be enough – children can get away with mixed up style more than adults can.
Savvy tip
You’re not at a fashion show – if you really need a couple of smarter outfits just take an extra blouse or shawl.
Pass it on – make a day planner
Draw up a rough day to day list of what you’re likely to be doing – it will help you focus on what clothes are going to be genuinely useful.
