Naomi Cleaver shares her eco tips
With appearances on numerous TV shows, including ‘Grand Designs: Trade Secrets’ and ‘British Best Homes’, home expert, Naomi Cleaver, is a household name today. She recently bought an Art Deco house in Devon and is currently drawing up plans to convert the property into a modern eco home.
Here are some of her top tips to reduce waste in and around your home.
General tips
• Identify your problem areas, for example leaky taps, a faulty boiler or excess waste food
• Use energy efficient light bulbs – they’re getting better and better every day
Shopping tips
• Try to buy products with minimal or recyclable packaging
• Reuse jars, yogurt containers and soup pots with replaceable lids for storage
• Look out for the Future Friendly ‘Less Waste, More Reward’ logo on household products, including Ariel, Fairy liquid and Duracell.
Kitchen tips
• Think about the number of recycle bins you need and where you’ll place them
• Invest in a crusher (from about £10) to manage bulk better
• Install an in-counter compost bin with an adjacent cutting board for veggie and fruit peelings
Garden tips
• Make sure your outdoor lighting is as energy efficient as possible
• Check you don’t have any dripping taps outside
• Make your own compost bin and grow your own fruit and veggies
Bathroom tips
• Invest in small recycling bins for the bathroom
• Fit aerators to taps and shower heads to make low pressure water go further
House hunting tips
• Look in the loft to inspect insulation
• Make sure the windows and doors seal properly when closed
