Cheap days out in winter Things to do with the family when a sunny day at the park isn’t an option.

Too many days spent indoors makes everyone sluggish, so here are a few ideas for ways to keep busy in the colder months.

Naturewatch
You can still get outside in winter, the secret is to keep moving so you don’t get cold! Find a local park or woodland that either has organised trails with a guide or which has downloadable trails your family can follow. From bird watching walks for beginners with the RSPB to reindeer family trails with the Forestry Commission – sites like these can be searched by area so you can find things local to you, often even near the middle of cities.

Get crafty for free
You’d be amazed how exciting museums are these days! There are lots of free museums all over the UK that have no-cost activities and crafts (every weekend and daily during holidays). To find your nearest museums, search by region at the VisitBritain website.

‘Holiday’ for a day
Out of season, Britain’s holiday camps often do special deals. Places like Butlins and Haven have great all-weather facilities including pools and other ways to keep the kids busy, and they don’t cost much for a day or afternoon pass. Check your nearest ones via their websites and search ‘day visit’ to see what they offer through the winter months.

Savvy tip
A pair of wellies costs about £5 and you’ll get tons of mileage out of them – on wet days in winter, get everyone out of the house and find the deepest, stuckiest puddles.  Even reluctant couch potatoes can’t resist the lure of mud.
