Blog Spot: Taking the kids to the doctor’s
We do the right thing by taking our children to the GP but our kids always have a way of shaming us!
Parenting manuals are odd, aren’t they? Once you have children, you actually never have time to read them.
So it was that I read a parenting manual before Flea was born that offered this handy tip on taking children to the doctor: “Play doctors and nurses with your child to familiarise them with the idea of seeing a doctor. Buy them a doctor’s kit and volunteer to be their patient.”
Well, I did all of that. And now I’d like a refund. Let me explain: Flea and I went to the doctor this week for a booster of some immunisation or other. My four-year-old bounded into the surgery, heading for the pile of books and toys.
“Can you just come and sit on Mummy’s knee and roll your sleeves up for me?” said the doctor. “I’m going to put some medicine into each of your arms, and when we’re done, you can have one of these sweets.”
Flea looked at the tub of sweets, which contained chocolate buttons and jelly babies. She thought for a moment. “You can do it if I can have two of each,” she said.
The GP was a bit taken aback. “How about one of each?”
“Two chocolate, one jelly baby,” said Flea. Then she thrust her hand at the doctor and said: “Deal?”
I suspect my name has been added to a register somewhere.
