Expert view: Nutritional tips for mums
Good food ideas to try, from nutritional therapist (and mum) Lowri Turner.
Good eating habits have to be rooted in basic rules you can manage and stick to. Try these three tips first.
1. Reduce your portion size. One of the easiest and fastest ways to cut calories. One idea is to eat with the kids and if you have younger children who have a slightly smaller plate, serve your meal off the same size plate as them.
2. Eat as many fruit and vegetables as you like. Raw, crunchy food is often better as it requires more chewing which releases signals to the brain. Fruit and veg are generally low calorie and have a good bulking effect and slow release of sugars, all of which help reduce feelings of hunger.
3. Do not cut back on protein. The biggest mistake I see my weight loss clients making is that they don’t eat enough protein. We need protein to repair our bodies and it is also the nutrient that makes us feel fuller for longer. Eggs, for example, are a quick and convenient way to add high quality protein to your diet, especially at breakfast.
Savvy tip
If your kids eat very early, you might want to have your own tea later. But don’t wait until they have gone to bed – eating before 8pm and avoiding snacking later will help get your diet in order.
