Making clean drinking water flow for everyone

Korduni

Clean drinking water is something we take for granted at the turn of a tap, but more than one billion people elsewhere in the world go without this basic priviledge for the whole of their lives. Now, through the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water charity programme we can share our everyday luxury. And the great news is that all of us can play a small part in supporting this change thanks to P&G’s partnership with Asda right here, in the UK.

The human need for clean drinking water
People in developing countries live in constant danger of serious illness and death. Infants and children are the most vulnerable – every day more than 2000 children die from waterborne diseases that cause diarrhoea because they only have access to contaminated water. In fact, more children die from illnesses such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid fever than from HIV/AIDS and malaria combined.

Changing and saving lives
Clean, purified, drinking water can reduce the risk of disease and death by about 50 percent. In a not for profit project, P&G has collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a water purification process that can be used easily in people’s homes. One sachet of water treatment powder quickly turns 10 litres of dirty, potentially deadly water into something that is clean and drinkable.

Giving children a brighter future
In Tanzania in East Africa, only 55% of the population has access to improved drinking water. Many of those who do not are women and children who have to walk on average nearly four miles every day to collect water for their families – water that is often contaminated. P&G went to see how the purifying sachets are making a difference.

Korduni’s story
Korduni Meshielki, 13, is Head Boy at Mswakini Chini School where Maasai children from 3 years to 13 come to learn. Water purification with the P&G sachets has become a part of their daily routine.

“In the dry season there is very little water and we have to walk 5km to collect it,” says Korduni. “Sometimes I have a bike to cycle but when it is not working I carry the water on my shoulders and I get very tired.”

Not only do children like Korduni now have time and energy to learn, but significantly, they are also spending less time away from class due to sickness caused by waterborne diseases. “Water is life but when the water is bad after one hour you feel pain in your stomach and get sick. ”

With improved attendance at school, Korduni and his friends are benefitting from a better education to set them up for adult life.

So pleased with the new Always Discreet! I am an avid runner and with the constant movement I was always having little accidents. Now, these don’t matter as I know I can rely on my protection. Having read through the blogs, I’ve noticed that others who do sport are also more confident now they wear Always. It’s soooo liberating! Thank you!
