How to keep your hair looking youthful

Time can take its toll on your hair, but we’re here to get your tresses back to their best, no matter your issue

From daily heat styling and finger-fiddling to fluctuating hormones, over time your hair can get thinner, drier and – of course – greyer.

But with a few hair-care tweaks and the right products, you can keep your hair looking healthy and youthful.

Read on to find your ageing issue, and how to fix it…

The ageing issue: it’s looking thin and flat

As the years go by, hair loss can increase and you may feel like your once crowning glory looks flat and lifeless. However, there are ways you can get your hair’s va-va-voom back…

The quick fixes: when blow-drying your hair, start by flipping your hair upside down and aiming the dryer at the roots while you lift the hair away from your scalp with your fingertips.

When it’s around 75% dry, flip your head back up and use a large round brush to lift the hair at the roots, pointing your dryer down the hair shaft for a smooth finish. Set the look with a blast of cool air and a spritz of strong-hold hairspray such as Pantene Pro-V.

For non-wash days, use Pantene dry shampoo, as this helps to absorb excess oil, as well as giving roots a boost.

The product: Pantene Foam Conditioner will leave your hair soft, smooth and nourished without weighing it down, as creamy conditioners might. Try the Volume Booster for an extra bit of oomph.

The ageing issue: it won’t grow

Hair can become brittle as it ages, so the ends break off, leaving hair straggly with split ends and seemingly impossible to grow. But there are ways to get your locks back to their long and luscious best.

The quick fixes: this problem obviously takes time to heal, but you can avoid bad hair days and help your hair to grow by wearing it up more often.

This will stop you from using heat styling and prevent you playing with your hair throughout the day. Just make sure you don’t use a tight hair elastic, which can break the hair. Instead tie it loosely with a snag-free hairband, or pin it in a twist with a hair clip.

Your hair is most susceptible to breakage when it’s wet, so avoid putting your hair in a towel turban, which can snag hair and weaken the roots. Instead, gently blot hair dry and use a wide-toothed comb when brushing.

The product: Pantene Pro-V Repair and Protect collection helps seek out damage in your hair, repair it and protect it from future damage, meaning you can avoid those regular split-end trims, leaving your hair to grow long and healthy.

The ageing issue: it’s super dry

Hair texture can change as we age due to changing hormones in the body, so you may notice your hair is feeling drier than usual. If this is the case, it’s time to switch up your hair care.

The quick fixes: washing your hair daily can strip it of its natural oils, so only wash your hair every two to three days.

Use a thicker, richer conditioner (see below) than usual, and avoid heat styling as much as possible, letting your hair dry naturally when you have the time.

The product: Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner helps repair three months’ worth of surface damage in just three minutes, giving your dry locks a new lease of life.

The ageing issue: it’s going grey

It happens to us all: from that first rogue strand to battling your grey roots on a monthly basis. However, there is a way to grow grey gracefully…

The quick fixes: grey hairs are most noticeable in the parting, so why not blow-dry your hair back, tucking it behind your ears? This will cover greys at the roots, plus it’s bang on trend this season. You can cover any rogue greys at the hairline and temples with eye shadow in a shade as close to your hair colour as possible.

Over time, you can start lightening your hair gradually, and ask your hairdresser to add in highlights and lowlights so your hair is multi-tonal. This will allow grey hairs to blend with your hair much more than if they’re set against a solid colour – plus it looks more natural and youthful.

The product: grey hair is coarser in texture, so you will need a rich conditioner. Try Pantene 3 Minute Miracle in Colour Protect to nourish your hair and help keep your colour vibrant.

I have fine hair. Inherited from my mum. Also I find that some products make my hair greasy. So by the end of the day it looks flat and awful. I have been trying out different products, to find one that leaves my hair thicker, fuller, shiney, and not greasy. So far I've not found the right product for me. But I think I will try the head and shoulders next.
