Our hair guru, Ben Cooke, reveals the 5 glam hair tips for summer

Celebrity hairdresser masterclass: five hot summer looks

Stylist to the stars Ben Cooke shares his tips on how to keep your hair glam in the heat

If you hair is pretty unmanageable at the best of times, during summer it’s probably a total nightmare. Dry ends, frizzy lengths and sweaty roots make for something akin to a bird’s nest.

So we’ve turned to Ben Cooke, who has 25 years of experience in the hair industry, for his advice. Having lead backstage styling at London Fashion Week and photoshoots for Leona Lewis and Nicole Scherzinger – he’s even the man behind Victoria Beckham’s iconic “pob” – he certainly has a trick or two up his sleeve.

Here he shares his top tips for summer, so you too can have gorgeous hair whatever the weather…

How to master… the bun

“When creating a perfect bun, the key element is a sharp parting. The anchor to this look is to use a tail comb for maximum precision and take your time. You can then adapt the texture of your bun from sleek to messy, depending on the occasion.”

We recommend: keeping your bun frizz-free with the Pantene Pro-V Smooth and Sleek collection,
RRP £3.99.

One of the best I've used for my hair. It leaves the hair rejuvenated, bouncy and sweet smelling

How to master… everyday waves

“Everyday waves have a cool, imperfect texture. Actresses and models achieve this by using large barrelled curling tongs, wrapping hair away from the face and leaving out the ends. This secret combination of actions creates less of a curl and more of a bend.”

We recommend: using Pantene Pro-V Dry Oil with Vitamin E , to help protect the hair when heat styling.
RRP £6.99

My dry damaged hair loves this! It is now a permanent addition to my hair care regime. It leaves my dry, brittle and damaged hair soft, shiny and flexible!

How to master… hydrated hair

“Summer is a time for switching to a power conditioner or mask to keep the condition as soft and healthy as possible. Use a conditioner at the ends of the hair instead of a styling product and leave it in all day.”

How to master… the casual summer updo

“There’s a difference between the classic bun and a weekend updo. If you ever wonder why, when you throw your hair into a top knot before getting in the shower, it looks better than when you spend time getting it right in the mirror, it’s because you’ve done it blind. Throw your head back and scrape hair up high on your head without looking in the mirror, then twist it into a knot and tuck into your hair band, adjusting in the mirror afterwards.”

We recommend: attempting your casual updo with unwashed hair, as it’s less slippery. Simply disguise greasy roots with Herbal Essences Dry Shampoo
RRP, £2.99

I have fine fly away hair, and this shampoo and conditioner have managed to control and give volume to my hair.

How to master… exercise hair

“When we sweat, hair absorbs salt and moisture and starts to frizz. Those who come out of the gym with hair as fabulous as when they went in are in on a secret. Apply a hair mask to towel-dried hair, brush through then scrape into a slick ponytail with a fine-toothed comb. The mask will help to keep hair off your face and hydrate hair while you work.”

We recommend: applying Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Masque, before exercising, and using an antioxidant shampoo such as Herbal Essences Bio: Renew in the shower afterwards, to naturally wash out all the impurities, leaving you with clean, soft hair that’s not weighed down.
RRP £6.00

This really did leave my hair feeling smooth & sleek. It felt very luxurious and tamed my hair and left it feeling lovely.
