Anti-ageing Hair Care

Anti-age your hair with these expert tips and products

Celebrity hairdresser Ben Cooke shares his advice on keeping your locks healthy and youthful looking.

As we age, we need to adjust the way we care for our hair and the products we use. This is because the texture can grow coarser, colour can fade, hair can thin – or you might simply be growing bored with the same-old style you’ve had for 20 years.

With this in mind, we’ve turned to Ben Cooke, who has 25 years of experience in the hair industry, for his advice. One of the most sought-after and prestigious hair stylists in his field, he has worked with numerous high-profile celebrities and so certainly knows how to crank up the “eternal youth” factor.

Here, he addresses common hair problems women face as they age and gives tips on how to solve them…

Problem: “My hair is changing texture”

Solution: “As grey hairs start to appear, hair can become coarse. The best product to use is a hair mask applied regularly to soften and hydrate locks. A top tip is to double shampoo before you apply your mask to rid hair of build-up and allow the mask to penetrate into the hair shaft.”

Problem: “My hair colour is looking lacklustre”

Solution: “Don’t over colour your hair when you start noticing greys, this will make you look more old-fashioned. Instead go for a gentle semi-permanent colour that’s a shade or two lighter and warmer. This will give you more natural dimensions and light reflection than a heavy block colour.”

Problem: “My hair looks thinner and is often prone to breakage”

Solution: “If you’ve lost the oomph in your hair, try using products that will add strength. Long hair in particular tends to become weak and damaged, so get regular trims to tidy up ends. A small trim every six weeks will boost bounce and lift.”

Problem: “I’m stuck in a hairstyle rut”

Solution: “It’s always more youthful to go for a slightly shorter length, just above or skimming the shoulders is ultra-flattering and on-trend this season. When styling, use a dry shampoo as a blow-dry spray instead of traditional hairspray or mousse. Tip your head upside down, massage into the roots and through the mid-lengths then rough dry. This will add lift and texture for a youthful, modern look.”

It's good to have glossy thick hair and I treat my hair gently. Letting it dry naturally if time allows helps, as does going easy on lots of products and hair straightners. A good shampoo and conditioner are essential and I've found a hair mask massaged into wet hair is good too. Remember though hair is not essential for good health, if you are on a budget it's better to take care of your feet and your teeth, before spending on make up and hair products. Health is everything.
