Celebrity hairdresser Ben Cooke shares his insider tricks on maximising your shine

London Hairdresser

From the red carpet to their Instagram selfies, celebrities’ hair is always in tip-top condition and glowing from root to tip.

So who better to reveal the tricks to shiny hair than a celebrity hairdresser?

Ben Cooke has more than 25 years’ experience and is often the first choice for celebs stepping onto the red carpet or getting ready for a photo shoot.

Known for creating wearable but glamorous – and often trend-setting – styles, here Ben shares his insider tricks to shiny hair. Don’t miss them!

1. Use the right shampoo

“Hard water contains minerals like copper, which can leave hair looking dull and lacklustre. This is why when you wash your hair on holiday it often feels bouncier and lighter, as water can be softer abroad. However, by simply switching to a shampoo that contains anti-oxidant blockers, this will help remove mineral build-up and leave locks looking shinier and healthier.”
We recommend: Pantene Pro-V Volume and Body Shampoo and Conditioner, RRP £3.99, contains histidine, a smart ingredient that helps prevent oxidative damage.

‘This is my absolute go-to shampoo and conditioner combination! It never fails to leave my hair shiny as well as bouncy and lightweight.’

2. Nail your blow-dry technique

“It’s the little tricks that professionals use when blow-drying that smooth away all the fuzzy bits that styling products alone can’t tame.

“Arm yourself with a good-quality hairdryer that has a nozzle. Hold the dryer above your head and position the nozzle downwards and blow-dry in six sections, moving the nozzle from root to tip for an ultra-smooth surface.

“Repeat the process two or three times for a glossy finish. Now smooth ends with a cream or serum to help seal split ends.”
We recommend: Pantene Pro-V Expert Collection Advanced Keratin Split End Fuser, RRP £6.99.

‘I absolutely love Keratin Split End Fuser. It makes my hair looking really sleek and nice and soft!’

3. Check out your brush

“Using the right brush will upgrade your blow-dry without much effort. Invest in a medium to large-sized round bristle brush, depending on the length and thickness of your hair.

“As you dry, hold the brush on top of your hair, moving it down the hair shaft from root to tip, pulling as you go. This tension will flatten the cuticle and give you a professional-looking finish.”
We recommend: Kent Natural Shine Radial Pure Bristle Brush, RRP £12.97 www.amazon.co.uk.

4. Use the right styling products

“Adding a little root lift to your hair will create a healthier-looking finish. Volume at the crown gives a vitality and movement to hair, giving you a younger, healthier look that enhances shine.

“Skip mousse and go for a dry shampoo spray at the roots. This adds volume and thickness without leaving hair feeling stiff.”
We recommend: Herbal Essences Clearly Naked Dry Shampoo RRP £2.99,
