Everyone’s Talking About… Autumn/Winter trends in hairstyles and make-up

We've scoured the catwalks for the five most wearable hair and make-up trends from the Autumn/Winter shows. Here’s how to get the look.

1. Tucked-in hair

How many times have you thrown your coat over your hair on your way out the door? Then you’ll be pleased to know that the “tucked-in” look is now a serious fashion trend for autumn. Best for those with long, straight hair, it gives the illusion of a chic bob with almost no effort.

“It’s just what real women do, they tuck their hair into their coats and off they go. It’s all about simple, easy hairstyles this A/W season, classic and with effortless practicality. It’s ideal for a cold winter’s day when it’s comforting to feel your hair close to your head,” says Pantene ambassador and catwalk stylist Sam McKnight, who championed tucked-in chic at shows Chanel and Mulberry.

Product must-have: Pantene Aqualight Shampoo and Conditioner. “While this isn’t a big concept requiring hours of elaborate styling, it does require you to have freshly washed, clean hair,” says Sam.

2. Berry lips

Switch from red to berry and you can tick off one of autumn’s key make-up trends. From Prada to Louis Vuitton, rich, fruity, berry lipstick ruled the runways. As for shade, anything ending in berry is autumn-winter approved – mulberry, raspberry, blackberry. In fact, there’s only one rule: go for an imperfect finish. Turn a lip colour into an on-trend stain by applying lipstick, then adding a lip balm and blotting it off with a tissue. Repeat as many times as you need for the depth of colour you want.

3. Flick tricks

No blending or smudging, no expensive brushes required, winged eyeliner is one of the easiest trends to do yourself – especially as this season’s flick has become more experimental, meaning mistakes are embraced. We rather love this elongated look in the eye makeup seen at Anna Sui.

4. Low-key hair colour

While crazy coloured hair dye has been fun, there comes a point when it’s time to get back to reality. Colour has become minimal again, so breathe a sigh of relief if you didn’t fancy pink streaks. Just an even, refined colour with a touch of restraint – no streaks or highlights.

5. Glam ponytails

We know what you’re thinking; ponytails aren’t really a hair trend. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Granted, the classic up-do is the bread and butter of most women’s hair styling repertoire, but just like a pair of jeans, the style alters slightly from season to season. So, let us introduce autumn’s glossy, glam ponytail.

“This season’s hair trends focused on elegant ponytails with a sophisticated edge that felt fresh and modern. At DSquared the front of the hair looked masculine whilst the back was wavy and feminine,” explains hair stylist Sam McKnight.
