Five steps to healthier, stronger nails

Strong, healthy nails are a sign that you’re eating a balanced diet, so why do some of us have to put up with constant splitting and breaking, even when we eat the right things?

It seems that our genes have a lot to do with it – and there’s not much we can do about those. But the way we treat our nails makes a big difference to whether they survive a busy lifestyle. Try these tips to keep them in the best of health.

1. Invest in a handcream

Like hair, the part of the nail we see is made up of ‘dead’ keratin. But moisturisers do help to prevent nails from drying out. Pick a handcream that you really love the smell of. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but if you enjoy the scent you’re more likely to keep up the routine.

2. Massage those tips

When applying handcream, take the opportunity to give your cuticles a massage at the same time to help stimulate growth.

3. Keep handcream handy?

A pot or bottle of cream should sit next to the soap on your sink so you remember to moisturise after washing your hands.

4. Don’t over polish

If you’re a nail polish fiend, you could be doing your nails a big favour by giving them a protective coating. But if you like to change colour with every outfit, then your nails won’t appreciate being constantly soaked with the harsh chemicals in removers – even the non-acetone varieties. Try to limit exposure to once or twice a week, especially if your nails are visibly protesting.

5. Use a nail polish base coat

It will set off the nail polish you use to much better effect.

Hi, Any idea which hand cream/lotion will work best, but not leave hands feeling greasy or slippy? I have resorted to UV Gel nails to cover mine as they are bad not matter what I do any ideas?
