Men’s skincare tips, whatever your skin type

Caring for your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Check out our men’s skincare lowdown for a swift, simple regime that will keep your looking your best


Male skincare is a lot less difficult than you might imagine. Your man’s current regime might even already include our three basic steps. Throw a few extra minutes at your face every time you’re at the washbasin, and you’ll suffer fewer outbreaks, dry patches and wrinkles. Yes, really: looking after your complexion need not be a chore.

Your three basic skincare steps are:
  1. Cleanse – aka wash your face, only properly
  2. Exfoliate – this is the shaving bit
  3. Moisturise – think of it as a massage

But hold on a minute - before you get going, you need to identify your skincare type: dry, oily, combination or normal. It has a bearing on how to treat your face as well as the products you use.

SKIN TYPE: DRY

Spot the signs: Your skin feels tight and uncomfortable after you’ve washed it. It’s flaky and you suffer from dry, scaly patches that can be red and itchy. Dry skin can also often be sensitive, it is thirsty and needy, and at risk of early wrinkles.

If you only use one product: make it moisturiser.

Your dry skin 5-point plan:

  1. Don’t be tempted to skip washing your face, but opt for a gentle product, preferably a liquid cleanser rather than bar soap, that won’t rip out all the natural oils.
  2. Shaving essential: pre-shaving oil, or a product containing soothing aloe, will help hydrate and calm your skin. Choose one of Gillette’s single- or double-blade razors to keep the chances of irritation low.
  3. Choose a rich face cream (rather than lotion or gel) that contains ingredients such as lanolin or vitamin E.
  4. Massage in face cream while your skin is still damp to help lock in moisture.

    Go the extra mile: dry skin benefits from being fed extra layers of nutrition. Adding a serum to your skincare regime (apply beneath moisturiser) will help keep dehydration at bay and prevent wrinkles long-term.

SKIN TYPE: OILY

Spot the signs: You find your skin develops a greasy sheen even if you’ve washed it recently. Wipe a finger on your face and you’ll detect an oily residue. You are likely to suffer from blackheads, spots and oversized pores. On the plus side, rejoice! Your well-oiled skin will laugh in the face of wrinkles.

Your oily skin 5-point plan:

  1. Cleansing is key although, ironically, frequent washing can stimulate your oil glands further. Look for products that contain exfoliating agents such as salicylic acid which penetrate your skin to allow deeper cleansing of pores and prevent clog-ups that lead to spots and blackheads.
  2. Shaving essential: Use a shaving gel instead of cream or oil and use lukewarm rather than hot water which can stimulate oil production.
  3. Use an astringent after-shave lotion or toner to help tighten your pores, but avoid harsh alcohol-based liquids.
  4. Your go-to moisture product should come in gel form. This will feed your skin and help prevent wrinkles without adding to oil levels.

Go the extra mile: apply a clay face mask once a week. It only takes 15 minutes and will deep-cleanse as well as help your skin deal better with excess oil on an ongoing basis.

SKIN TYPE: COMBINATION

Spot the signs: Many men find they have combination skin, which means that the central ‘T-zone’ (forehead/nose/chin) is oily while your cheeks suffer from dryness.

If you only use one product: insist on exfoliant

Your combi skin 5-point plan:

  1. Sorry, but you’re going to have to treat different parts of your face in different ways. Time to stock up on products to suit both oily and dry conditions. See above. Exfoliation is key to help deal with oil levels in your T-zone, but limit it to a couple of times a week.
  2. Shaving essential: Odds are your cheeks suffer from dryness, while your chin is more oily. Gillette’s responsive Fusion ProGlide razor will help. 
  3. If you have areas of skin that are normal – neither dry nor oily, use a moisturising lotion, which is light and easily absorbed. Regulate how much you use – more on dry sections and less on oily parts.
  4. You may suffer dryness around the eyes that feels worse because of your oily forehead and nose areas. Look for an unperfumed eye gel product that will soothe and not irritate.

Go the extra mile: Keep your hands away from your face. Touching the oilier bits can make them worse and further stimulate oil production, while picking at dry areas can lead to soreness.
