To shave or not to shave… should he or shouldn’t he?

To shave or not to shave… should he or shouldn’t he?

Beards have existed forever, of course, but shaving has been around a long time too. Is it enough these days for a man to limit hair removal to his face, or should he go further?

Shaving: a long tradition

The act of shaving has been around for millennia, probably originally for hygiene reasons. Having a hair-free face, head and body reduced the risk of infestations such as lice. It also helped people stay cool in Mediterranean regions - such as Ancient Egypt, where it was customary to remove all body hair - and reduced odour.

So shaving is nothing new. But it became more mainstream early in the 20th century after Gillette invented of the safety razor. The clean-shaven look was encouraged among troops in the First World War so that gas masks would fit more closely and therefore work better.

These days, it's a matter of personal choice, of course. The recent beard craze appears to have been short-lived; it didn’t take long for us to reach ‘peak beard’ and a clean-shaven face appears to be back in vogue. If that’s your look of choice, make sure you arm yourself with a really good razor. The Gillette Fusion Proglide has unique Flexball technology which makes getting into every little contour of your face easy-peasy.

In recent years, shaving for men has extended beyond facial hair. Blame celebrities for our obsession on body beautiful for men. Don’t forget sportsmen who shave for professional reasons either - cyclists, swimmers and divers. It’s a fact: aspiring to a largely hair-free body is now common practice.

If you are re-thinking your options on depilation, after your face it is probably your back, chest and shoulders that are likely to be your main focus of concern.

What do women think?

Obviously, it comes down to personal preferences. Some women like the man-wolf look: hairy chests rock and even hairy backs aren’t an issue. Others appreciate a baby-smooth body, especially if it’s showing off a lean, athletic physique.

But most women appreciate a man who pays at least some attention to keeping his hairy bits under control. We’re talking hair management. A regular trim of the nether regions keeps things fresh (and accessible!), while if you have particularly furry shoulders and back, you might want to think about concentrating your hair removal efforts on this area at least.

Bye bye body hair?

As you get older, you will probably find your body hair growth starts to accelerate. So what are the ’manscaping’ options if you find you’re starting to bear more than a passing resemblance to Chewbacca?

Before you do anything, ask your partner what she thinks. Will she miss the thicket that is your chest? Maybe she doesn’t like the thought of having a husband who’s less hirsute then her?

Once you’ve decided to embark on operation smooth torso, select your hair removal technique. A combo of the following may suit you best: waxing, shaving and trimmer. If money is no object, you might also consider laser treatment.

There is no getting away from it: waxing hurts. If you’re considering this for your most sensitive areas - good luck. Remember to take a stick to bite down on. Ouch. The main advantage of waxing, however, is slow re-growth. Hair is removed from the root, so you can expect a back wax to last or up to six weeks.

Shaving is a much more cost-effective option, although regrowth will come sooner, and you will need to recruit help to get to the hardest-to-reach areas. It’s quick though, and painless. A once-over with the Gillette Body Razor, specially designed for grooming – ahem - male terrain, every few days will keep things in check.

Even if you’re not going down the hair-free route, keeping your body hair neatly trimmed is a hygienic, thoughtful option.

Get yourself the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Styler – it’s a 3-in1 styling tool that you can use on your face (to fashion your goatee, sideburns etc) and for manscaping other areas such as your chest and elsewhere. Interchangeable heads allow you to trim to different lengths and around a variety of body parts. You can even use it for wet shaving!

My opinion of the Braun Silk-expert has gone from strength to strength, it's been so easy to use and a delight to try out, I have been delighted with the results over the last 4 weeks and I'm so happy with the fact I am seeing less hair grow and at a slower rate than usual. This is a great product and really has changed the way I feel about IPL in a positive way! Thanks Braun.

I didn't shave between SIlk-expert treatments this time and was amazed how much slower the regrowth was. The hair did not look like it had been a week since I had last shaved. I am excited about next week and the week after, to see results this quickly is very exciting!
