23-day winter rescue plan for your skin

Make a little change to your beauty routine each day and protect yourself against dull wintry skin

Winter puts all sorts of stresses on your skin: dry, cold wind and abrupt changes of temperature inside and out strip the moisture from the surface and dull your complexion’s healthy glow. But protecting it needn’t involve long and complex routines. Just trying one extra thing each day could transform your winter skin, ensuring that as soon as spring comes, you’ll already be blossoming.

1. Nourish the skin

We all need to be well-fed for winter, and your skin is no exception. Swap out your regular cleaning face wash for a nourishing cleansing milk, such as Olay Essentials Conditioning Milk, which soothes and restores your face with Aloe Vera.

2. Care for your cuticles

Just before bedtime, massage a little cuticle oil into your nails. The oil will keep them well-moisturised and build their strength over time. When you’ve got a little more time to spare, give your fingernails the full spa treatment with our guide to nail care essentials.

3. Make those lips pop

If you’re in a rush and don’t have time for a fully made-up face, go for a bold lip colour. It lifts your whole complexion and stands out against dull winter hues. Try our expert tips on how to find the right shade of lipstick, whatever your age.

4. Go for bronze

Bronzers are the perfect beauty product to help you fake a healthy sunkissed glow, so don’t just save them for summer. For winter, choose a light shade without any shimmer. Then using a brush, gently sweep it over the areas of your face the sun would naturally hit – your temples, forehead, cheeks, the tip of your nose, and along your jawbone. Check out our tips on new ways to bronze up.

5. Don’t forget sunscreen

Even when on dull winter days when you can’t see the sun, UV rays penetrate the cloud cover to age your skin. Protect yourself with a daily moisturiser such as Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Ageing Day Moisturiser with SPF to keep your complexion healthy and glowing.

6. Get tressed for success

The start of a new season is the ideal time to cut a fringe, change your hair colour or go a little shorter. Check out our expert tips for easy ways to fall back in love with your hair.

7. Hydration, hydration, hydration

It’s one of the cheapest and easiest beauty treatments available, and it’s amazingly effective. Ensure that you get around eight glasses of water a day to hydrate your skin from the inside, ensuring it looks healthy and vibrant.

8. Look after your lashes

We all tend to keep old mascara for too long. But mascara tubes can be breeding grounds for bacteria and after about six months the formula begins to break down from exposure to the air. So make sure you invest in a new one twice a year. If you notice a strong unpleasant smell from the tube, ditch it immediately.

9. Quit smoking

Don’t wait for the new year to make this resolution: it’s the best thing you can do for your skin and your general health. Smoking harms the ability of your body to break down old skin and replace it with fresh tissue, causing skin to sag and wrinkle. For tips on how to quit, check out the NHS Stop Smoking website.

10. Floss every day

A bright smile works wonders for the way your complexion appears. But brushing alone only cleans 65% of the surface of your teeth. To ensure your teeth stay white and healthy, try a floss such as Oral-B Pro Expert Premium Floss. Check out our guide to taking care of your pearly whites with floss.

11. Use a serum

They offer a targeted formula of powerfully concentrated ingredients to revitalise and regenerate your skin, so using a serum as well as a regular moisturiser is a great way to take care of skin in winter. Try Olay Regenerist 3-Point Super Serum for dramatically firmer-feeling skin. Massaging the serum in also helps with microcirculation, helping to give you a rosy glow.

12. Organise your make-up bag

Your skin will thank you for making sure your make-up is fresh and clean. Set an hour aside for a good old clear-out, throwing out anything that looks too old. Clean eye and lip pencils by sharpening them. While you’re at it, clean all your make-up brushes with a mild shampoo and dry them out thoroughly. Make this a weekly habit to avoid breakouts or infections.

13. Don’t overheat yourself

A hot bath or shower is a delightful way to relax in chilly weather, but water that’s too hot dries out that skin and risks causing broken capillaries and spider veins. Instead of turning your bathroom into a sauna, check out our guide to turning bathtime into a mini spa break at home.

14. Protect your hair from damage

In cold weather, there’s little chance of hair drying naturally, but all that blow-drying or heated styling tools can cause damage. Luckily, help is at hand: wash with Pantene Pro-V Repair & Protect Shampoo and Conditioner to restore shine and protect from heat damage.

15. Clean your mobile phone

Your phone is a magnet for bacteria: studies have found up to 42 per cent of phones harbour bacteria, which can cause serious illnesses. Pressing all that mixed oil and dirt up to your face can’t be good for breakouts either. So keep things clean by investing in some dedicated wipes and making sure your regularly spruce up your phone.

16. Start using an eye cream

It’s never too early – or too late – to fight fine lines and wrinkles. To keep your peepers looking bright, start by investing in a regular eye treatment, such as Olay Regenerist Luminous Eye Swirl. Then check out our quick tips for a radiant look.

17. Use hand cream with an SPF

Our hands have to brave the elements just as much as our faces. So they need similar moisturising creams to recover from dry, cold winds and sun protection to prevent damage by UV rays – even in dull, cloudy winter.

18. Scrub up well

Using a good exfoliating product on your face and body at least twice a week has a double benefit. It gets rid of a layer of dead skin cells, revealing a brighter complexion beneath. And it allows the facial treatments you use to penetrate more deeply, for better results. Try Olay Regenerist 3 Point Super Cleansing System for cleansing that’s four times better than face washing alone, and check out our guide to healthy skin.

19. Use night cream to repair skin while you sleep

Night time is when your skin regenerates, so using a night cream such as Olay Complete 3-in-1 Night Cream can help make the most of this crucial restorative time. Its antioxidants, essential vitamins and 24-hour hydration will help your skin recover from the stresses of the day.

20. Choose a nourishing body wash instead of soap

Traditional soaps can dry out the skin, so they’re best avoided if yours is easily irritated. Instead, opt for a creamy body wash with soothing ingredients, such as shea butter, coconut oil or the macadamia nut oil in Aussie Shower Smoothie Body Wash.

21. Give your hair a break

Even the strongest hair can’t withstand a full-on assault of peroxide or relaxers. Chat with your hairdresser about how to give your hair a rest for a few months. It may require a different cut or a daily routine that will camouflage roots or unwanted waves, but your hair will look far better in the long run.

22. Protect your skin with a mask

Give your skin a powerful boost of hydration with a moisturising mask to tackle the damage from cold winter wind and overheated rooms. Just apply, leave and peel away to see an amazing rejuvenated look.

23. Try a seasonal scent

Make a fresh impression with a new fragrance. Chilly days are brightened up with warm notes of scent, so try vanilla, musk, amber, iris or exotic woods as well as white flowers such as jasmine and magnolia.
