At this country house and estate you can picnic in the orchard while there are activities for the children, such as  wildlife watching, dressing up in costumes in the house, or having fun in the adventure play area Squirrel’s Corner adventure play area. Beddgelert, Wales
Picnic on the banks of Glaslyn river in this pretty village, set in Snowdonia National Park, and discover the Legend of Gelert. Gelert was the faithful hound of the medieval prince Llewelyn the Great. The dog defended the prince’s baby from a wolf attack, but when Llewelyn saw Gelert covered with blood he killed the creature, believing it had turned on the infant. Too late, Llewelyn found the slain wolf and the child unharmed. A tragic tale to share! Suitable for all but especially kids 5+.

JM Barrie’s Birthplace, Scotland
The novelist who created the magical story of Peter Pan was born here in 1860. In the garden there is a living willow crocodile to picnic by, plus there are regular hands-on activities and the Pirates’ Workshop to explore. Especially good for kids 3-10 (baby carriers permitted inside, pushchairs in the grounds).

Prehen Wood, Northern Ireland
Just outside Londonderry, on the east bank of the River Foyle, this pretty ancient wood is a magical place to wander. Children can dash about looking for the animal wood carvings found on logs dotted about the forest. Good for adventurous kids 7+.
