Canterbury Festival, Canterbury
October 19 to November 2
This lively festival in the heart of Kent includes family activities, like the colourful opening parade on Saturday October 19 at noon.

Cartoon Constellations, Liverpool
October 21 to 25
From 1.30-4.30pm each day, there’s a chance for children to create mythical creatures and strange cosmic beings to feature in a huge ‘Map of the Heavens’ with artist Jim Medway, at Tate Liverpool.

The Big Draw, UK wide
Until October 31
Throughout October this celebration to get all ages creating homemade art will include events all over the UK, with half term activities especially for children and families. Find things happening near you at the Big Draw website.

Giants in the Forest, Edinburgh

During the half term holidays let the kids explore the growing natural sculptures around the Rangers House at Holyrood Park. They can conjure up their own adventures among the strangely shaped trees and bushes.

Diwali Decorations, Swansea
October 26 & 27
Open to all and inspired by the Hindu festival of lights, this National Waterfront Museum drop-in family craft session invites children to make beautiful Rangoli patterns using colourful powders. The museum is great for a family day out anytime during autumn half term holiday, as there is also a free screening of ‘Hugo’ in 3D on Sunday and there are ‘weird science’ activities in the week.

Ghosts in the Glens, Cushendall
October 26 to 28
A wonderful ghost stories festival for all ages, with fancy dress, walking and storytelling events especially aimed at little ones during the three days, taking place to celebrate the cultural heritage of the Glens of Antrim, Northern Ireland. Find details on the Ghost in the Glens website.

Museum Monsters, London
October 26 to November 1
The Museum of London has free family events throughout the holiday, and the theme is Monsters. There are storytelling, pottery and digital art activities through the week, aimed at a variety of ages.

Halloween Ghost Train, York
October 26 to November 3
There will be lots of spooky half term activities at the free-entry National Railway Museum, and for a small fee you can try the ‘ghost train, too...

Halloween Festival, Torquay
October 27 to November 3
Cockington Court hosts a week of free arts and crafts for families, inspired by all things spooky. There are events and activities for kids in nearby Totnes, too.

Halloween Bats, Cardiff
Tuesday October 29
At 11am, 1pm and 3pm there are sessions exploring the lives of the bats that live hidden around the grounds of the wonderful, free St Fagan’s National History Museum. There are other free things to do with kids all week.
