Made with love

Made with love

Show your Valentine you care with one of these handmade gifts.

Flowers and chocs are great, but this year, why not take a little time to create something truly personal for your special other half?

Light of your life
Create a quirky paperweight using odds and ends.

Time: 2 hours

You will need:
safety goggles and gloves
wooden blocksandpaper
screw-in light bulb (not fluorescent or halogen)
long-nose pliers
screwdriver
2 red paperclips
scissors
hammer
nail
glue
fine liner pen
white paper
red pin-board pin

To make:
1. Lay down enough newspaper to cover a large work surface so any pieces of glass that scatter when you hollow out the bulb are contained. Put on the goggles and gloves.
2. Cut out a 6x6x6cm block and smooth the edges with sandpaper.
3. To hollow out the lightbulb, grip the bottom end of the bulb using pliers and give it a good twist, pulling out the brass contact and carefully cracking the black glass insulator.
4. Insert the screwdriver into the opening and tap the now exposed fill tube until it breaks. Shake out the filament and any other broken bits of glass.
5. Use the pliers to bend the red paperclips into heartshaped “filaments”, making sure the hearts are narrow enough to fit through the base of the bulb.
6. Insert them into the bulb at the desired height and cut off the extra wire that extends out of the bottom of the bulb.
7. Use a hammer and nail to create two small guide holes on the top of the wooden block.
8. Put glue into each hole and insert the ends of the paperclips.
9. Fit the bulb over the heart filaments and glue the base of the bulb to the wooden block. Write a note and attach it to the block with the pin.
