August Editor's Letter

We share our top tips to entertaining outdoors.

Hello Homesavvy readers,

I love August don’t you? It’s my youngest daughter’s birthday so we have the perfect excuse to get all our friends over for a summer garden party. Sometimes we have a BBQ, sometimes we dress it up as any six year old would dream – lots of pink, lots of balloons and lots of treats. But there’s always a grown up element to our outdoor dining. It’s really easy to make your garden look spectacular when you have guests over. Whatever the occasion – a dinner, lunch or party we try to create a room in the garden and I’ll share with you how I do it this month. It’s the extra touches that make all the difference like creating table centre pieces – one of my all-time favorite things to do, or setting up some bunting – a clever trick to brighten up any dull or unsightly corner of your garden. Check out my video which has more inspiration for table decorations.

You can’t relax and enjoy having anyone over for a cup of tea let alone a garden party if your garden isn’t looking neat and tidy. Get your garden looking its best so you can enjoy every last bit of the summer sunshine. It’s also not too late to plant up some colourful blooms. Read which flowers I want to add to my garden.

Whenever my husband suggests throwing a BBQ I always think it’s the easy option – but it’s not. Yes, there’s less to clean up if you use paper plates and you’re outside so you don’t have to worry about sauce stains on the carpet, but they still take some organising. I’ve devised a fail-safe action plan to make sure everything goes according to plan. The key is to make ahead, marinate ahead and light the coals early. What do you think? Check out my BBQ plan here.

If you want to serve something different from the usual cloudy lemonade then I’ve created some refreshing summer berry smoothies you can try out, they take minutes to make and are practically fat-free. And what’s more the kids love them and don’t even know they’re getting three lots of their five a day in one easy go!

Back in January our Hotpoint washing machine competition was so popular that we’ve teamed up with Ariel again to give you another chance to win, to enter click here.

Whatever you’re up to have a great August
