Make your own pampering products

Homemade toiletries make for great gifts. Here are a few easy ideas to get you started…

Untitled Document

Creating your own top-to-toe pampering range is fun and easy to do. Most of what you need could already be in your kitchen, while ingredients such as beeswax are easily sourced on the internet.

Choose your favourite essential oils to add to the mix for a bespoke fragrance. You can also add a few drops of food colouring as a skin-safe way to create more vibrant bathroom goodies or simply keep your blends in their own natural shades.

For professional-looking results, package your products in pretty glass bottles and add ribbons, bows and handmade labels to create personalised presents for friends and family. They’re also great for a girls-night-in pamper party

Hand and body lotion

This recipe makes a rich moisturiser that’s ideal for soothing parched hands. You can use it as a body cream, too, and is great for post-shave legs. Use it to lock in the moisture from your Venus ProSkin Sensitive razor. Together with the razor’s hydrating strip, it will leave legs soft, smooth and fit for flirting.

You will need:

  • 250ml sweet almond oil
  • 120ml avocado oil
  • 90g pure beeswax
  • 80ml mineral water
  • 5ml essential oil (optional)
  • 1-2 drops food colouring (optional)

Pour the sweet almond oil, avocado oil and beeswax into a heavy-based saucepan and warm over a low heat, stirring continuously until the beeswax has melted.

Heat the mineral water and gradually add it to the oil mixture, taking care not to let the hot oil splash.

Remove from the heat and stir continuously until the mixture becomes creamy and reaches body temperature (37°C).

Stir in the essential oil and add the food colouring, if you opt for it. Keep stirring until the mixture has completely cooled to avoid the oil and water separating. If this does happen, reheat the mixture over a low heat, remove from heat and stir continuously until it has cooled down completely.

Fizz granules

The perfect present, you can create them in whatever colour and fragrance combination you know the recipient will love. Package them in an airtight container, with a decorative wooden scoop.

  • 500g bicarbonate of soda
  • 250g citric acid
  • 250g cornflour
  • 5ml essential oil
  • 1-2 drops food colouring (optional)
  • dried flowers (optional)
  • witch hazel

To make
Pour the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mix well with your hands. Now is the time to add in any dried flowers, essential oil and food colouring if you’re opting for them. Rub into the dry ingredients with your fingertips.

Pour the witch hazel into a spray bottle and lightly spritz the mixture. Take care not to spray too much or the mixture will start fizzing. Mix well with your fingertips to combine. Keep going until the mixture resembles the consistency of damp sand.

Keep spraying with witch hazel and mixing with your fingertips until the granules are roughly the size of 5p pieces.

Spread out the granules on a baking sheet lined with wax paper, then dry in the oven on a very low setting. After about 20 minutes they should be rock hard and ready to be packed.

Room spray

This is the simplest recipe of all and something you can easily make at home. The fragrance possibilities are limitless, so you can create individual sprays for yourself and all of your friends and family. Simply pour 250ml distilled water into a spray bottle, add 10 drops of essential oils and shake the mixture well.

Hair oil mask

Leave locks smooth and glossy with this easy-to-make hair treatment. You can use any type of oil, but some suit different hair types better.

You will need:
Sweet almond oil is great for normal hair, while castor oil is more suited to hair that tends towards greasy and coconut oil is perfect for coarser tresses. For fragrance, add up to three drops of your favourite essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil and/or herbs such as rosemary, parsley, green tea or chamomile.

To make
Gently warm the oil by placing it in a small bowl placed into a larger bowl of very hot water.

Stir continuously and after around 15 minutes, use a muslin cloth or coffee filter to strain.

Apply the warm oil to hair in sections using a pastry brush and massage into the scalp. Pop on a shower cap followed by a hot towel and leave for at least 30 minutes before shampooing.

Massage oil

This wonderfully fragrant oil is quick and easy to make. Perfect for pamper parties, a gift or a treat to yourself. Pour 100ml sweet almond oil into a container (preferably made of glass as not all plastics are suitable for storing oil), add six to 10 drops of essential oil and shake well.
