Spring Break ideas for the family

Spring Break ideas for the family

Easy and cheap ways to enjoy mini-breaks together. Over bank holidays the prices for travel and accommodation often hike upwards, but there are a few options that provide a refreshing chance to try something new, and they don’t have to break the bank. Plus a short break once in a while can give you all a real lift when a longer summer holiday seems far off or is just not affordable.

House swap
You can swap with people you’ve never met either in the UK or abroad (there are several secure websites offering this kind of service), but it can be fun just switching homes with friends or family. Other families are bound to be as chaotic as you, so there’s no need to spend weeks tidying your home so it looks like a B&B, either.

Camping
Go on, it’s really not that scary! And the great thing about camping for a long weekend rather than risking your entire two-week summer break under canvas is that if the weather’s bad, you only have to play the part of gung-ho adventurers for a couple of days. The Enjoy England website features campsites all over the UK. It’ll feel like a real change of scenery even if you just pick somewhere that’s half an hour from home.

Get abroad

Ferries to France cost as little as £30 to £50 return outside the summer holiday period, and there are some wonderful little towns along the north coast just beyond Calais that are different enough from home to make you feel like you’ve really escaped. For a real change, why not take a train to Dover, go as foot passengers and stay somewhere in Calais itself? It’s a very pretty town and you don’t have any of the driving or traffic jams…
