1. Thanks Mexico! The oldest documented traces of chocolate date back to the Olmec period, around 1100BC, in south central Mexico. The Mayans and Aztecs were known to enjoy chocolate drinks, too.

2. The great Victorian John Cadbury created the modern chocolate bar when he developed a process to make solid chocolate. He was also an animal lover and a founder of what eventually became the RSPCA. Cadbury World near Birmingham is a popular family attraction.

3. Chocolate contains alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine and phenethylamine) which can stimulate changes in the body and are linked to the brain’s levels of the feelgood neurotransmitter serotonin.

4. One warehouse worker in Iowa, America, was so desperate to get his chocolate bar after it got stuck in a vending machine, that he used his forklift truck to lift and shake it out. He got his chocolate bar but he lost his job!

5.  Chocolate isn’t a treat to share with your pets. The caffeine and theobromine are poisonous to cats and dogs and can even be fatal for them.

6. The best temperature to store your choccy treats is around 15 to 17°C. When chocolate is kept in the fridge it can get white marks, caused by sugar or fat crystals rising to the surface.

7. Eaten in moderation, high grade dark chocolate has been linked to several possible health benefits, though many trails have not found conclusive results in humans. Plus you have to resist eating too much!

8. Throughout the year there are chocolate festivals all over the country where you can shop for yummy delights and see the UK’s brightest chocolate makers at work.
