Mother's Day

Millie, Badly Drawn Mum

Yesterday I got the sweetest Mother’s Day card from Evie. I know she was forced to make it at school, but that doesn’t devalue it in the slightest. I got a present, too. Admittedly I must have been going on about the self-sufficiency thing a bit too enthusiastically, as it was a dozen sachets of seeds.

“I thought it was more original than flowers,” said Dave. And you’ve got to give him that. Doesn’t look as pretty in a vase, mind. Not that I’m complaining. Mother’s Day is one of those occasions people like to write off as a cynical invention by greetings-card companies. But I love it. Getting a folded piece of card coated in globs of glue and glitter, scrawled with (what I think are) the words, ‘I love you, Mummy’ is, for me, one of those moments that makes it all worthwhile – like when they sing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ in the bath, and forget the words at the school nativity.

There were other treats, too. Dave cooked up a feast of a Sunday lunch (MIL joined us and was actually really well behaved) AND I was excused from all cleaning/ironing duties. Back to reality today though – am removing industrial quantities of peanut butter from the back of the sofa. Anyone got any tips?
