Savvy school fair ideas

Easy ways to make summer fetes, school jumbles and other fundraising events a bit more fun. Beyond tombolas, cake sales and second-hand toy stalls, here are a few ideas we love from school PTAs around the UK.

Ideas to try at your next school PTA event

• Plant stall. Enlist a greenfingered parent or two to collect up old pots and make some cuttings from different family’s gardens.

• Dad’s den. Get the kids and dads to create an adventure playground in the corner of the school grounds – it’s a good way to let kids let off steam during a busy school fair, and it’s nice to have activity that doesn’t involve parting with cash.

• Teachers’ penalty spot. Get a rota of sporty teachers, put them in goal, then charge children a small fee to have three tries at scoring from the penalty spot.

• Matchbox challenge. Set a competition to see how many different items people can fit into a regular size matchbox and get them to bring their entries (50p to enter) to your event – the winner is announced on the day.

• International food stall. Invite parents to bring along a plate of food traditional to their own families’ country of origin, be it a long lost link with Ireland stew or a recipe from Morocco.

Savvy tip
Any time of the year you can have a skill sale. Whether it’s an hour’s ironing, clothes mending, babysitting or something like giving a music lesson or painting a garden wall, get parents to offer a simple skill for £10-£30. Offer these on your school website for a month before your event. Parents only have to offer one session but it soon adds up.

Pass it on
– Princess reading time
Make a magical covered space somewhere in the school playground, scatter cushions around then dress your storyteller in a princess costume to read fairy tales. A lovely way to offer a more laidback, free activity for infants.
