What Goes Around Comes Around

Millie, Badly Drawn Mum

Something has been nagging over the past few days, making me feel unsettled. I wasn’t able to put my finger on it until I was laying out Evie’s school uniform, ready for her first day at big school. I was nervous. But not for Evie. I couldn’t be prouder of her, she’s funny and smart and has BAGS of confidence. I know she’ll skip through the school gates without a backward glance.

The worries are all mine. Will she be okay? Will she make friends? Please don’t let anyone be mean to her. I aired this all to Dave who was, as always, brilliantly pragmatic. “What was your first day like?” Well, I remember being nervous at the gates and being shown my peg which had a green fish on it. Most clearly though I remember sitting in Mrs Ross’s class as she asked us our names and what we wanted to be when we grew up. Everyone’s answers were pretty standard (princesses, nurses etc). Apart from Jane, who stood up and said, loudly and proudly:

“My name is Jane and I when I grow up I’d like to be a waitress in AMERICA.”

Then she curtseyed. My best friend Jane, who I’ve known for 29 years, who now lives 3 roads away and whose daughter starts at school with Evie tomorrow.
