5 great reasons to buy a pet

Beyond the fun you share, owning a pet can bring other unexpected benefits to your life.

1. Great exercise
If you get a  puppy that needs regular dog walking, or even a rabbit that you like to play with in the garden, you get physically busy without even noticing.

2. De-stressing
Playing with pets has been linked with lower blood pressure and can definitely help take your mind off other worries.

3. Sociable
Relating to a pet and understanding its needs can be a great way for children to understand that others are as important as they are, and encourage a better approach to friendship-building in the years ahead.

4. Boost self confidence
Talking and feeling close to a pet can also make a child more confident before they try their own ideas out on the bigger world.

5. Healthy
As well as make you do more exercise, it is believed that exposure to  pets can reduce the risk of children developing asthma and common allergies later on in life.

Savvy tip - Get prepared!
Before you buy a dog, draw up a pretend rota for walks, cleaning, feeding etc, then during one week, at the set times when chores would need to be done, remind each person what they’d be doing. Would they really get their coat on to walk their pooch on a cold rainy afternoon?

In you’re unsure, start by looking for low maintenance pets. A stick insect, for example, can be a great introduction to the responsibilities of having a pet. For more ideas, check out Alternative family pets.

Glad Im not alone was just about to say as cdalyirl already has , why not promote rescuing and giving a loving home to an animal rather than buying a pet !!!

I'm disappointed to see the encouragement of BUYING a pet. In this day and age, I think it would've been more appropriate to promote animal rescue centres. Or at least amend the article and remove any and all references to purchasing an animal to have as a pet.
