Are you tired of the usual ‘legs, bums and tums’ classes at the gym? Bored of the treadmill? Why not try Zumba? Created by Alberto ‘Beto’ Perez – a Colombian dancer and choreographer – it’s such an accessible dance fitness program that there are now classes in gyms and village halls all over the UK.

Zumba fitness at a glance
Zumba is a combination of exhilarating Latin-American music mixed with meringue and samba moves, a hint of belly-dancing, a reference to hip hop and, hidden here and there, a couple of squats and abdominal-strengthening twists. The training ensures you get a toned and contoured body without a moment of boredom. The high-impact lessons are therefore great for activating the metabolism, burning calories and getting the heart pumping.

Mix of rhythms
Zumba dance is one of the most effective workouts for the entire body, not only to regain form and tone but also to improve coordination, achieve a more elegant posture and more fluid movement. The rhythm of the music gets all the muscles into gear, straightens the back and raises the shoulders. The best part is that you do it without even noticing, having fun above everything else.

Don’t dance? Don’t worry!
Zumba classes are suitable for everyone because the steps are simple and, after the initial feeling of disorientation, following the steps is almost a game. Making a few mistakes is absolutely allowed, in fact, it’s all part of the fun!

Going beyond Zumba
Alongside classes based on Zumba’s original style, there are sessions where you can use weights similar to maracas to increase the rhythm and pitch. There are also classes where you sit (these are aimed at strengthening the upper body), and classes in water (typical Zumba choreography with water aerobics).
