Dr Uchenna Okoye gives her expert tips for keeping kids’ teeth healthy

Creating effective oral care routines early, not only means healthier teeth for kids, but less tantrums too! Follow these top tips from Oral-B’s Smile Director, Dr Uchenna Okoye, to help keep your kids’ teeth healthy:

1. WHEN TO START? It is important to start brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as they appear. This will get them used to the feel of a baby toothbrush in their mouth and establish brushing as part of their daily routine. The sooner you start, the easier it is to ensure good habits later.

2. USE THE RIGHT TOOLS. I recommend using products specifically for children. There are toothpastes and manual/electric toothbrushes specially for kids! Oral-B has a great range called 'Stages' which has everything you need to tackle tooth decay in children.

3. SIZE MATTERS. Before you even begin, make sure your child is using the correct toothbrush for the size of their mouth. It is crucial for babies to use a toothbrush that has been specifically designed for them. If the brush head is too big they will not be able to reach the teeth at the back allowing plaque on teeth to build up.

4. THINK SMALL. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to strengthen their teeth. Encourage your child to brush in circular motions and to make sure every tooth is covered.

5. HELP! Until about the age of eight, it is important for parents (or an adult) to help children brush their teeth to ensure they are doing it correctly. It also helps for them to see their parents brushing their teeth to show the correct brushing technique used. If an adult is doing the brushing, stand behind the child so you can support their head and you will be able to brush more effectively.

6. MANUAL OR ELECTRIC? Parents should consider buying a children’s electric toothbrush from age three and
then make sure you’re there to Oral B stages powersupervise how it’s used. Not only will it be more fun, it is also a more effective way of brushing and will make it easier for them to do it on their own. The Oral-B Stages Power, RRP £45.99, is a great first electric toothbrush for kids which will make brushing time, fun time!

7. TOP TIP! I recommend using disclosing tablets to visually show kids any areas they missing. Areas with plaque stain pink or purple, and the darker the colour, the longer the plaque has been there. Most people use them first and then brush, whereas I suggest the opposite. Use after brushing so children can see exactly where they are missing. It’s a great plaque removal tip for grown-ups too!
