Relax at home with simple techniques

Relax at home with simple techniques

Simple stress relief ways to relax and revive yourself.

Allowing yourself some ‘time for me’ will boost your state of well-being and give you more energy to enjoy everyday home life.

Getting started

  • Allocate time to get tasks done – if you do work at home, make sure you keep papers etc in one set place and clear all work away when the time comes to stop.
  • The same goes for household chores. Don’t let these eat into every day. Instead allocate one day or a set period each morning for laundry, tidying etc then stop.

How to relax your breathing
Breathing more deeply and evenly is a great way to calm down.
IMPORTANT – If you have any medical concerns relating to breathing, talk to your doctor before trying any breathing exercises.

  • Sit somewhere quiet and make yourself comfortable.
  • Breathe in through your nose, thinking about how your lungs are filling up from the bottom to the top.
  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth.
  • If you feel breathless don’t overwork yourself, just breathe in and out as slowly as feels comfortable. Don’t hold your breath.

How to relax your muscles
Sitting or lying down in a quiet space – or with some chilled music – can help you relax.
IMPORTANT – if you have any physical problems avoid ANY overstretching and ask your doctor before trying new exercises.

  • Hands – start by stretching out your fingers then relaxing your hands, do this a few times.
  • Neck – gently tip your head forwards so your chin dips towards your chest. Don’t make sudden movements, just repeat this slowly down and back up to facing forwards.
  • Shoulders – shrug your shoulders slowly up towards your ears then back down.
  • Legs – tip your toes away from your body then bring them back so they are reaching upwards. Repeat up to ten times.
  • Arms – taking care to feel how far your shoulders are happy to stretch, slowly circle your arms out to your side. Do one at a time if you prefer.
  • When you have done this, take five or ten minutes to relax and rest where you are.

Savvy tip
Keep active. Even just a brisk walk twice round the block on busy days will help. Exercise re-energises you to deal with any issues and it’s a great stress relief. It also helps you get a good night’s sleep.

Pass it on – Little boosts from everyday things
A long bath, time to rub in some body oil after a shower – small pleasures like this can really help. Why not read our feature on how to Turn your bathtime into a ‘spa break’.
