Pretty Edible Gifts: Choc-nut snack bars

This pretty homemade food gift is ideal for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Choc-nut bars

Makes: about 30
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Baking Time: 35 minutes
Oven temperature: 180°C or gas mark 4

Nut bars
180g plain flour

25g cornflour
150g treacle sugar (dark brown)
115g cold butter (cubed)

350ml large salted peanuts roughly chopped
1 large egg

100g butter

250ml treacle sugar

60ml golden syrup

120ml cream

100g white chocolate, chopped

To make the bars:
1. Grease and line a 24cm square tin.
2. Combine the flours, sugar, butter and 250ml of the nuts in a food processor and blend until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
3. Add the egg and process again.
4. Press into the greased pan.
5. Bake in a preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes, until golden.
6. Remove from the oven and set aside.

To make the topping:
1. Heat the butter, sugar and syrup together over a medium heat.
2. Stir until the sugar has dissolved.
3. Once it has dissolved, add the cream and simmer, stirring occasionally until the mixture reaches soft ball stage. (If you drop a little of the mixture into a bowl with cold water it should form a soft ball.)
4. Pour over the baked layer.
5. Scatter the chocolate and remaining nuts over the toffee.
6. Allow to set and refrigerate.
7. Remove from the tin and use a serrated knife to cut into the bars.

Gift wrapping
You will need:
Choc nut bars (recipe above)
Flat white gift box
with an acetate window in the top
Pink ribbon

Craft glue
Double-sided adhesive tape

Pretty hat-pin beads
Letter charms
A silver bracelet

To make:
1. Roll up lengths of pink ribbon to form a simple rose design.
2. Stick the flowers with craft glue on to the sides of the lid of the box.
3. Line the bottom of the box with greaseproof paper.
4. Pack the chocolate bars into the box. Close the lid.
5. Make a label from a picture of yourself and your special friend or friends. Print out the photo and cut into a circular shape. Attach a pretty hat-pin to the back of the picture with double-sided tape. Stick on to the front of the box.
6. Make a friendship bracelet from beads and letter charms for your friend, using the letters that spell her name.
7. Tie on to a length of ribbon and tie the ribbon around the box.
