Apple crumble

Crumble is so much easier to master than pie. A perfect pudding for a child to prepare for the family.

Ingredients (serves 5 people)

  • 4 large cooking apples
  • Handful of sultanas
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 50g brown sugar
  • Dusting of cinnamon
  • 300g plain flour
  • 200g brown sugar
  • 200g softened butter
  • ice cream to serve (optional)

  1. Peel and slice four big cooking apples.

  2. Place these in an ovenproof dish along with a handful of sultanas and two tablespoons of water.

  3. Sprinkle with 50g brown sugar and a dusting of cinnamon.

  4. Put 300g plain flour, 200g brown sugar and 200g softened butter in a bowl and rub together by hand until it looks like crumble mix.

  5. Top the apples with the crumble mix and sprinkle a little more brown sugar on the top.

  6. Bake on gas mark 4 (180°C or 350°F) for 40 minutes.

  7. Serve as it is or with ice cream.
