Cosy up the sofa
Boost the comfort and joy of your sofa by giving it a Christmas makeover. Replace the existing cushions with decorative ones with reindeer and robin print covers, for example, or drape a throw with a wintery scene over the sofa.
For an extra jolly change, find a colorful slipcover and put it over your sofa for the holiday period.
Centre of attention
Tree ornaments can double as a fun and inexpensive centerpiece for your dining table. First choose a colour theme, like red and silver or gold and sparkly, then place the baubles in a large bowl or platter for eye-catching cheer.
Make a garland
Decorating the mantel with garlands sets an elegant festive vibe.
Pick up pine, holly or ivy cuttings from your garden or local garden centre. Lay the greenery down first to create a base, then accent with small pine cones, silk poinsettia blooms or a few shiny ornaments. Weave striped or sparkly ribbon through the garland for a finishing touch.

Change to festive linens
Bring the Christmas spirit into every room by switching the linens. In the kitchen, use holiday-themed dishtowels or in the bathroom, hang red hand towels. Or try replacing everyday bed linens with ones in seasonal colours or patterns.

Run with it
A colourful runner adds seasonal flair to your dining table. Complement the look with simple white plates and napkins.
Lighten up the place
For a touch of whimsy, place lights in unexpected places throughout your home. Outline a doorway with a strand of fairy lights, wrap a strand around a bannister or post, or bundle a strand or two together and place in a glass bowl. Look for battery-operated lights to avoid too many wires around the house – especially if you have youngsters around.
Garnish the bannister
Greenery adds an outdoorsy feel and makes your home smell good, too. Try tying clusters of pine branches to a bannister with festive ribbon and accent with silver or red bows.
Showcase Christmas cards
Are you looking for a creative way to display all the cards you’ve received? Get the kids to collect long twigs from the garden and arrange them in a large vase. Punch small holes in the cards and thread with string or ribbon, then tie cards onto the branches to make a creative card bouquet.
Tie bells to the front door with cheery ribbon as a musical and spirited way to welcome guests.
Dress up a wreath
Take a simple wreath, like one made from pine cones or pine greenery, and turn it into a dashing focal point. Hang it with mini tree ornaments or attach bows for added impact.
Mix a festive potpourri
Make a holiday spice mixture from ingredients straight from your kitchen cupboards, like cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise. Place in bowls around the house to spark your senses with yummy aromas and for an easy festive decoration.
Deck out a window
Ornaments aren’t just for trees. Feature some of your favourites by hanging them in the window. Thread them with varying lengths of ribbon and tie them to the curtain rod. Just remember you won’t be able to close the curtains!
