Five new Christmas traditions: do it your way

Whether it’s your first Christmas as a family or you’ve been cooking the turkey for years, it’s never too late to start a new Christmas tradition. Here are some ideas.

Replace candles with melts

Make your home smell of Christmas – and we don’t mean sprouts. While constant cooking in a full house can make things seem a little reeky, there’s an easy way to make sure your family associates Christmas with fresh fragrances. Just put a New Febreze Unstoppables Wax Melt into a festive-looking wax warmer and in just 15 minutes your home will be filled with a clean, warm scent that will forever evoke the festive season to your family. And with no open flame, it’s child-friendly (and pet-friendly) too!

Give the kids a new ornament each year

It’s tempting just to buy baubles and tinsel in bulk, but just by buying one or two more unique and charming ornaments each year, you’ll soon have a tree that is truly personal for your family. Why not start a tradition of choosing a special ornament each year to go in the kids’ stocking, so they can place it on the tree on Christmas morning? Then when they go on to have their own families, they’ll have a ready-made stock of truly meaningful decorations.

Turn carol-singing into karaoke

Ok, so we all love a few Christmas carols on the radio, and cheer when the singers coming knocking, but it doesn’t take long for Good King Wenceslas to get a bit tired. And who wouldn’t get a bit self-conscious warbling out Ding Dong Merrily round the Christmas tree? Try doing karaoke with some Christmas classics instead – a few eggnogs later, you’ll all be belting out the power ballads together.

Ditch the turkey lunch

There’s a huge sense of occasion with a roast lunch, but why stick to turkey? Lots of people prefer chicken, beef, fish or even goose. And if you have vegetarians or vegans in the family, you’ll need to cook an alternative anyway. Go for whatever tickles your taste buds at this time of year, or something you know you can cook well and easily, and consider creating a new traditional lunch for your family this Christmas.

Swap your Christmas cake for cupcakes

Look, maybe you love Christmas cake. But it’s definitely an acquired taste, and increasing numbers of people simply don’t like it, so there’s no need to pretend. Just replace it with something everybody loves. You could go for a lighter cake that still has the same warming wintery flavours of cinnamon and cloves, or why not go in the opposite direction and make cupcakes or fairy cakes? It’s easier, quicker, and your children will probably thank you.
