Home looks: clean, modern spaces

Redecorate with stylish simplicity – and it might inspire the whole family to keep the place tidy!

Clean walls
Unify your look by using only clip frames for posters and pictures, or one style of simple dark wood or silver frame.

A long view
Step back – looking from the hallway into the lounge, for example. Use complimenting colours or one pale shade for both hallway and lounge for a clean look. Don’t spoil the view by letting the eye focus on clutter if shelves are positioned on a wall facing the door.

Stripes
Toned-down vertical stripes on curtains, and checks or stripes that echo this on cushions or throws can give you a tidy look without completely doing away with the homeliness of patterns.

Mirrors
Position mirrors not only for looking in, but in corners or higher up on walls of your home where they will reflect light from windows.

Cupboards not shelves
Cupboards spare your messy blushes and give a far more spacious look than busy shelves. Glass doors look great but only on cupboards where what you are storing will look well-arranged behind them.

Beyond white
White walls throughout create a spacious effect, but if this is too cold for you, add blocks of colour on one wall or in recesses. Muted orange, stone, oatmeal and pale blue sit well alongside white, but don’t be afraid to try even dark greys – these can really work as a backdrop for glass, steel and leather furnishings.

Savvy tip
Try colours before you buy. The Dulux website has a great function where you can click on a photo of a room and apply various shades to it to see what appeals to you.
