How to avoid that flagging feeling
Tips for staying upbeat throughout the day
Whether it’s caused by a stressful school run or a stinking cold, we all know that ‘flat battery’ feeling. So here are a few ideas for topping up your power reserves.
The five-minute freshener
If you work in an office you’re probably encouraged to take a regular break from your computer. It helps you concentrate and lifts your energy levels. And the same benefits can be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere.
Next time you’re feeling sluggish, take five minutes out and do something that really gets the blood flowing, such as:
- Whole-body stretches
- Running on the spot
- Running up and down the stairs
- Make and drink a healthy smoothie
- Listen to a motivational podcast
- Pet your cat/dog/rabbit/partner…
- Get outside and soak up some vitamin D
The simple tension reliever
Deep breathing also releases tension from the body - and helps clear the mind. Lie on your back and breathe out completely through your mouth. Then breathe in slowly through your nose. Hold for a count of two to five (whatever you can manage) then slowly and steadily breathe out through your mouth. Try placing a small cushion on your abdomen - it should rise as you breathe in and fall as you breathe out. 15 minutes a day is ideal, but it all helps.
The musical mood-lifter
Scientists have found evidence that music really does influence how happy we feel. Why not check through your music collection and create a playlist of your favourite happy tracks?
