6 steps to perfect party-season legs

If your legs have been hibernating under tights and trousers, set them free and make them look fabulous with this routine

Christmas parties are the perfect excuse to dust off your fanciest frocks and go glam, but this comes at a time when many of us have let our leg care slip.

After all, what’s the point in scrubbing, shaving and moisturising when we’re going to hide them away under our winter woollies anyway?

But now you face having to get your legs out again, here’s how to make sure they look their best…

1. Prevent unsightly bruises

You don’t want a bruise to be a blimp on your otherwise perfect legscape. Of course one way of doing this is to stop walking into things, but if you’re particularly clumsy, a few drops of lavender oil or witch hazel dabbed on the bump with a cotton pad should stop the bruise from appearing thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties.

If you already have a bruise, you can cover it with make-up after applying your fake tan (step five), which should also help disguise it. Using a foundation that matches the skin on your legs (post-fake tan application), dab it on with your fingers and blend with a foundation sponge. Top with pressed powder to fix.

2. Exfoliate away dead skin

You should exfoliate once a week and it’s a good idea to co-ordinate it with the next steps as it preps your skin perfectly for hair removal and fake tan.

3. Epilate your hair away

Who has time to shave every day? Or go to a salon for a wax? Certainly not busy mums. That’s why epilation is a great option, because you can do it at home and the results last much longer than shaving. Plus you don’t have to let your hair grow long before you epilate, as it removes hair four times shorter than if you waxed.

The Braun Silk-epil 9 has a wide head for faster epilation and the MicroGrip tweezers remove hair as short as 0.5mm from the root. Use it in or straight after a bath or shower as the heat opens your pores, for a more comfortable experience.

4. Moisturise and treat your skin

Soothe your skin with a rich body lotion to ensure it’s smooth and soft. Make sure you leave enough time for it to sink in before moving onto step five…

5. Fake it

That summer glow is probably long gone by now and if you’ve been left with a pair of pasty pins, a bit of fake tan can work wonders.

Go for one that’s only a couple of shades darker than your natural skin tone, as it needs to look natural and there’s less of a risk of it coming out an unattractive shade of orange.

Whether you go for a lotion or spray is down to personal choice, but always follow the instructions, be careful when applying around joints such as ankles and knees to prevent a patchy finish, and always wear gloves or a special mitt to avoid tell-tale brown palms.

6. Make them shine

For a final touch, wait until your fake tan is completely dry, and smooth a strip of highlighter down the front of your shins and feet. This adds a sexy sheen and elongates the look of your legs.
