The idea of shopping for an all-new summer wardrobe and stocking up on summer fashion might seem a little over the top. After all, we’re all aware of the impact of fast fashion these days. And given the notoriously unreliable British summer, splashing out on summer fashion might not seem to be the best use of cash.

They key is to work out which basics you’ll be able to get maximum use out of, and then base your summer style around these. Learn more about the basic building blocks of easy summer style…

1. Find your go-to denim

A perennial wardrobe favourite, denim is a summer fashion staple. Think denim skirts, culottes, shorts and shirts when the heat is on. But there’s no reason why you can’t wear jeans either – look for wide leg or tapered styles in lightweight cotton. Skinny styles or heavy-duty denim may just feel too hot.

2. Think in layers

The Great British summer can be unpredictable at the best of times, and you’ll want to be ready for evening temperature drops or a chilly breeze at the beach. Keep your summer style bright and cheerful by picking emergency cotton cardigan, oversized flannel shirt or cosy pashmina wrap.

Go for pretty pastel tones, cheerful patterns or bright colours, so you can bring a touch of fun even if the weather turns gloomy.

3. Go for jersey basics

When it comes to summer fashion tips, this is one that stays true all year round. Simple jersey dresses, jumpsuits and playsuits are a summer style saviour – and better yet, will work in your wardrobe in winter. Just throw it on and you’re done in one.

There are so many shapes to choose from, that it should be easy to find one to suit, whether you go for a spaghetti-strapped sundress, wrap front playsuit or swishy wide-legged jumpsuit. And come winter, just add tights, boots and a polo neck underneath and you can carry on wearing your favourite summer style staples.

And to make life super easy, jersey is generally washable so you can just throw it in the wash with Bold 3in1 Pods and be ready to go again. Find a cut and length that you love and then buy two, so you can live in them all holiday long.

4. Source sandals that work for you

We’ve all done it – fallen for a gorgeous pair of sandals that turn out to be completely un-wearably uncomfortable after about three steps, or fall apart within weeks.

Work out what works for you. It could be that you find a slight heel more comfortable than flats, or that it’s easier for you to walk in shoes that have straps rather than sliders or flip-flops. Find the right pair, and they’ll keep you going all summer long.

5. Don’t forget the accessories

Not just a summer fashion tip, this is another one that stays true all year round: accessories really can make your outfit. A boho tasselled belt to cinch a floaty maxi, while a skinny glitter one will instantly elevate a basic jersey sundress.

Statement necklaces or earrings (not both at the same time!) will do the same when you’re wearing a simple t-shirt. And don’t forget the sunglasses!

6. Try tailored shorts

You might not think that shorts are office-appropriate, but with so many smart, tailored styles out there, they absolutely can be. Opt for a slightly longer length than you would on the beach, and pair with a co-ordinating blazer or crisp white shirt to keep it looking smart.
