In winter, we can hide away under layers of clothes, but in summer we often reveal a little more skin.
This means that skin complaints, which can often also be aggravated by sweating in hot weather, can become a bigger problem, and make you want to hide away when the sun’s shining.
But with our tricks for solving four common summer skin issues, you can enjoy every minute of soaking up that sunshine. And remember, no matter what skin type you have, your skin will only stay happy and healthy if you protect it from the sun with a high SPF.
1. Thigh rub
Unless you are one of those mythical creatures who has a thigh gap, thigh-rub in summer is all too real. Summer dresses may look lovely, but it’s not long before you have to walk like John Wayne as those chafing thighs result in painful pimples… ouch.
You can buy chafing lotions designed for runners, or simply swipe your deodorant on your inner thighs to help prevent sweating. A smear of coconut oil or a sprinkle of talcum powder are cheaper alternatives – the former helps your thighs glide, while the latter dries out any excess moisture. But you may need to keep this topped up throughout the day.
Alternatively, you could try some non-slip lace bands – like the ones you would find at the tops of stockings. You pop these around the tops of your thighs and it’s goodbye thigh rub, hello sexy legs!
2. Ingrown hairs and stubble
We finally get to unleash our legs from tights – hoorah! But this does mean upping our hair-removal routine, otherwise our legs are marred by stubble and bumpy ingrown hairs.
To avoid stubble, why not swap your razor for an epilator? This removes hair at the root, meaning you will stay smoother for longer.
The Braun Silk-epil 5, for example, removes even short hairs, meaning you don’t even have to let your body hair grow first – like you would for a wax.
Also, ingrown hairs are caused when short-cut hairs grow under the skin, so removing hairs at the root helps prevent this. To be doubly sure, exfoliate your legs before using the epilator and then twice a week to prevent dead skin cells from blocking pores.
3. Shiny face
A mix of sweat, excess oil, and greasy suntan lotions can leave your skin looking more “super shiny” than “summer glow”.
Switch your usual moisturiser for an oil-free, fast-absorbing and non-greasy formula, such as Olay Total Effects with SPF30. This comes with the added benefit of a high SPF, so it protects your skin from the ageing effects of the sun without clogging pores.
You could also carry a pack of blotting papers or a pressed powder compact to help absorb any sweat throughout the day.
4. Chicken skin arms
The small red bumps that can be found on the backs of your arms, thighs and bottom are harmless, but can affect your confidence if you want to wear a sleeveless top, shorts or swimwear in the summer.
Every day, warm a little coconut oil between your hands and smooth it onto the affected area. After a week or so you should notice a reduction in the pimples. Also, moisturise daily and gently exfoliate your skin with a body brush twice a week to keep it feeling fresh and looking renewed.
