We all need something to look forward to in life and these romantic hotspots will definitely give you something to fantasise about. Whether you fancy a memorable Valentine’s Day, an extra special birthday or a ‘just because’ getaway, we’ve got lots of lovely ideas that are sure to have you head over heels.

1. Verona

Home to Romeo and Juliet, few cities can trump Verona for romance. Whether or not you fancy re-enacting the famous balcony scene, there’s plenty to keep you busy in this wonderful Italian city, from the Roman amphitheatre to the Palazzo Barbieri. And of course, a gelato break would be mandatory.

2. Edinburgh

To save on the cost and hassle of flying abroad, has Edinburgh ever crossed your mind? Tourists flock here all year round and it’s easy to see why: narrow streets and grand buildings make this a truly stunning city. There’s plenty to do day and night, from strolling through Princes Street Gardens and checking out Edinburgh Castle to nosing around one of the many art galleries. Foodies are well served too: you can find everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to cheap-and-cheerful eateries.

3. Barcelona

Barcelona has so much to offer: festivals, art, culture, architecture, fantastic food and more. Perhaps you might enjoy a picnic in the Parc de la Ciutadella, then take in some art at the Museu Picasso before a spot of tapas and a chance to make the most of the city’s buzzing nightlife.

4. Vienna

Oh Vienna! This city’s Baroque beauty has inspired some of the worlds’ greatest musicians, artists and minds, from Schubert to Freud. Its lively mix of cool cafes and bars, galleries, shops and street markets mean you’d never be short of things to do, and there are plenty of stunning hotels to experience.

5. Camber Sands

This East Sussex jewel is another home-grown treasure. Enjoy seven miles of soft, sandy beach that’s perfect for sunset strolls hand-in-hand. It doesn’t hurt that the area’s packed with great restaurants and chi-chi boutique hotels either!

6. Paris

Okay, Paris isn’t the most surprising suggestion for a romantic getaway, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the best. Whether you’re losing yourselves in the world-famous Louvre, surveying the landscape from the top of the Eiffel Tower or revelling in the splendour of Versailles, it’s hard not to love the City of Light. And that’s before we’ve even taken into account the shopping and the food – it’s a great place to get adventurous and try some new flavours. Bon appétit!

7. Florence

Florence may be small, but it’s very much one of the world’s ‘must-see’ cities. This cradle of the Renaissance is sure to delight lovers of art and architecture, with Giotto’s frescoes, Michelangelo’s David, canvases by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and a host of other greats in the Uffizi Gallery. And if all that beauty helps you work up an appetite, what better way to satisfy it than in the trattorias and wine bars that make a trip to Florence so dolce?

8. Istanbul

Istanbul is an amazing mix of cosmopolitan chic and old-world charm. Everywhere you go, there are architectural reminders of its rich Ottoman history – the Hagia Sophia to name but one. The souks are not to be missed either. Just be prepared to haggle with a smile! And when evening comes, you can treat yourselves to a cocktail while watching the sun set over the Bosphorus. Now that’s what dreams are made of.
