How many times have you come back from a trip with a load of unworn clothes in your case? If it’s happened more than a couple of times, then it’s time to get the hang of packing light – or at least lighter!

Start by packing the essentials: tickets, passport, medication. Then, put out what you want to take with you in piles according to type – so one for shorts, one for toiletries and so on. Then use our handy hints to help you cut down on the amount.

1. Colour coding your clothes

Identify a colour palette, and only take clothes that fit it (alongside neutrals). You might go nautical, with reds, whites and blues. Or tropical, with prints and plains. The key is to ensure that all your clothes work together to maximise your choice of outfits.

2. Simplify your haircare routine

So, you can either take one small can of dry shampoo or you can pack shampoo, conditioner, heat protection spray, hair spray, hair dryer, straightening irons… Yup, dry shampoo really is your mini-break best friend (plus, if you’re going camping, exactly where were you planning to do all that styling?).

You could try Pantene Cheat Day Dry Shampoo Foam, which freshens all hair types in brings it back to life in 60 seconds flat.

3. Pick double duty items

The lipstick that also works as a blusher, the wrap that can double as a blanket if it gets chilly at night, and let’s not forget baby wipes, which can be used for anything from removing make-up to cleaning up a spill – any item that does more than one job will save you space.

4. Remember the wow factor…

Bearing in mind your colour palette, take one item that wows. It might be a fabulous frock, or printed silk top – but it’s the thing that makes you feel fantastic when you’re out for the evening

5. …but bring neutral basics

To let your wow factor piece shine, wear it with neutral basics. This might be nude sandals with your dress, or plain black trousers or culottes with the fancy top. You’ll get loads of wear from these basics as they’ll go with everything else, even if you only wear the wow piece once.

6. Don’t forget your accessories

Great accessories are a brilliant way of brightening and varying your look. That fabulous necklace takes up hardly any space, for example, but it sure makes your LBD pop. Ditto a great scarf or belt.
