Think you’ve got a healthy smile? Find out why Britain needs to brush-up and fight the invisible enemy

A recent national survey commissioned by Oral-B revealed that Brits still have a lot to learn when it comes to maintaining a clean, healthy smile. Only three quarters of the nation are brushing their teeth for the recommended two times per day and over 50% have up to five cavities or fillings!

This idle approach to oral care is a major reason for the build-up of plaque – the invisible enemy that affects everyone – there are no exceptions. A staggering 90% of people in Britain have no idea how to check their plaque levels, which is a worrying statistic given that plaque is the underlying cause of gum problems, cavities, bad breath and tartar.

Dr Uchenna commented: “It’s disheartening to see so many adults and children with teeth in such a poor state. Caring for your teeth is so important. I was shocked to see that only 15% of the population have plaque on their radar when the reality is that 100% of people have it – it’s inevitable. I can’t stress enough the importance of brushing twice daily with an electric toothbrush to keep plaque levels down because it’s plaque that causes most oral health problems.”

The research also uncovered that two thirds of people are still using a manual toothbrush instead of an electric toothbrush, and the same percentage don’t know that using an electric toothbrush is one of the best ways to help fight plaque!

Dr Uchenna concluded, “An electric toothbrush is to a manual brush what a vacuum is to a dustpan and brush – there is no contest! If we educate the public now, we can hopefully save the next generation from a plague of plaque-related problems” says Dr Uchenna Okoye.

Plaque fighting top tip:
Use an electric toothbrush. Oral-B Pro electric toothbrushes with new Cross Action head uses 16 degree bristle technology to remove up to 100% more plaque from along the gum line than a regular manual brush (RRP: From £49.99)
