Three delicious detox smoothies

Keep your immune system happy through the autumn and winter with these easy and nutritious fruity detox drinks.

The chilly months can bring a much greater risk of cold and flu, so in dark days with exhaustingly long school terms, the whole household can benefit from good eating habits. They don’t have to be hard work – try our healthy recipe ideas for Nutritious family eating for winter health, and these three detoxing super smoothies… Your body will thank you!

Carrot-beet-ginger mix

Carrots are a great source of beta carotene (vitamin A). Beets are rich in antioxidants and if you’re retaining water, can help relieve that, too. Chia seeds add protein, omega-3s and crunchy texture.

Ingredients (serves one)
• 1 large or 2 medium beets, peeled and quartered
• 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped
• 1 small chunk (about 2cm square) fresh ginger, peeled
• 120ml water or unfiltered apple juice
• 1 tablespoon chia seeds

1. Combine the beets, carrots and ginger in blender. Add half of the liquid to help get the blades moving. Add more liquid if desired. Blend until smooth.
2. Stir in chia seeds. Let the smoothie sit for one to two minutes so the seeds plump up.

Green-lemon mix

Kale is the superstar of superfoods but its taste can be a bit harsh. Lemon helps cut the grassy flavour and apples add natural sweetness.

Ingredients (serves one)
• 6 leaves, romaine lettuce, roughly chopped
• 6 stalks, kale, inner ribs removed and roughly chopped
• 1 or 2 apples, peeled, cored and chopped
• 1 lemon, juiced
• 1 small chunk (about 2cm square) fresh ginger, peeled
• 250ml water

1. Combine the ingredients in blender with half the water.
2. Add more water if it’s too thick, then puree until smooth.

Power-berry mix

Blueberries are off the chart when it comes to health benefits! They contain antioxidant phytonutrients, which are known to help prevent disease and age-related illnesses. Add strawberries for extra nutritional punch.

Ingredients (serves one)
• 100g blueberries
• 60g strawberries
• 240ml milk of your choice

1. Combine the ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.
2. If you use sports nutrition supplements, you could try adding a heaped tablespoon of protein powder.
