So, how do you clean stains from a carpet?

Stubborn stains come in many different forms — wine, candle wax, coffee... And anything you can tread in! Although you can use chemical stain remover for rugs or carpets, using your own solutions at home can be just as effective. It is usually best to base your cleaning method on the type of stain you have. However, before you start working your magic, there are a few basic rules you should follow to ensure optimal results:

  • Find out what kind of carpet you have

  • Work out what kind of stain it is

  • Do not use coloured towels for cleaning

  • Do not use too much carpet stain cleaner

  • Test the home remover on a small area of the carpet first

  • Do not scrub or rub the carpet, and simply dry it instead

  • Clean the resulting stain quickly

How do you get blood stains out of a carpet?

Accidents happen! And while cuts are evidently painful, they can also be highly inconvenient when carpets are involved. The best carpet stain remover you can use for blood is 2 parts detergent (washing up liquid or hand soap) mixed with 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Make sure to keep this solution away from children or animals as it can be toxic if inhaled, ingested or if it makes contact with the skin. Oxidised water can also be used as an alternative.

Oil-based paints do not wash off with water, but only with turpentine if still wet or a solvent if dried — to get rid of such stains, you should use extraction gasoline. For water-based paints, a teaspoon of dish soap mixed with a cup of warm water should do the trick for wet stains, whereas with dry stains, you should pour some hot water over the stain for softening purposes, before blotting a few drops of dish soap onto it. Once stains are removed, rinse the carpet with warm water and leave to dry.
