It's become a bit of a buzzword, and a detox can sound daunting, conjuring images of green drinks and no fun stuff. In reality, it can be really simple. No one can be 100% saintly, so despite our best efforts the bad stuff sneaks into the body, be that pollution, toxins, stress, overdoing the booze or poor food choices.
Taking small, simple steps on a daily basis to rid yourself of the nasties will not only make you feel better in the short term, but will make a longer, more thorough cleanse much easier if you do decide to embark on one.
1. Drink up
What's the first thing you want to glug down once the alarm goes off? For most of us, it's a cup of coffee or mug of tea, which gives us a caffeine fix to kick start the day. Swapping this for warm water with a slice or two of fresh lemon will rehydrate and help to flush the digestive system, making it easier for the body to eliminate waste products.
2. Brush off
Before you step into the shower, get into the habit of spending two minutes dry brushing your body. Not only will it slough off dead skin and give you a glow, it is said to help move lymph fluid into the lymph nodes and speed up its elimination from the body. It's great for boosting circulation too.
3. Happy hair
For fresh tresses, gently wash away daily impurities with Herbal Essences Daily Detox Clean Shampoo and Conditioner with Golden Raspberry and Mint. It's mild enough for daily use, silicone-free and won't strip colour treated hair. And the scent is divine.
4. Rough stuff
Fibre is essential element of your diet, and has excellent detoxifying powers. It helps to move food waste through your digestive tract, allowing your body to get rid of the stuff it doesn't need. Fibre-rich foods include whole wheat and grains, dark leafy vegetables and pulses.
5. Get sweaty
We all know the benefits of exercise for mental health and physical fitness, but getting your sweat on can help detox the body too, by helping it to get rid of chemicals and heavy metals. Try to fit in something that makes you sweat every day, whether that's running for the bus or relaxing in a sauna.
6. Bath bliss
Add an Epsom salt bath to your bedtime routine to enhance the body's natural detoxification process. Draw a hot bath, add 250gm of Epsom salts and 5-10 drops of essential oil (lavender is great for helping you sleep) and soak for about 15 minutes. Afterwards, you'll nod off in no time!
