Make the most of berry season with smoothies that are quick and easy to make, healthy and super tasty

They may be little but the likes of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries pack a big nutritional punch. They’re also low in calories and fat.

Most importantly of all, they’re delicious, and, right now they’re in season which means they’re at their best and their cheapest.

That doesn’t mean to say that you can’t enjoy these smoothies all year long though (because, believe us, once you’ve tried them you’ll be hooked!). In fact, frozen berries are a thrifty, year-round choice.

Low fat berry loveliness

This smoothie tastes like an indulgent treat but is actually low in calories and fat. What’s not to love?

Ingredients: ½ a banana, 6 strawberries or a small handful of mixed berries, ½ a glass of water, a few mint leaves (optional).

Method: Blitz all the ingredients until combined, adding a few ice cubes if you want your smoothie super-chilled (or just use frozen berries).

This smoothie can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for 12 hours but it's best drunk straight away.

The breakfast berry smoothie

This is one of those smoothies that satisfies your hunger and keeps you going from breakfast till lunchtime. Plus, you’ve got the added health benefits of oats which are rich in a specific type of fibre called beta-glucan which helps to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol.

Ingredients: a handful of blueberries or berries of your choice, a handful of oats, ½ a banana, ½ a glass of skimmed milk, a drizzle of honey (to taste).

Method: Blitz all the ingredients until combined. Enjoy straight away.

The refreshing smoothie

This smoothie will keep you cool and refreshed on warm summer days. We used Gala melon but any variety of melon will work.

Ingredients: ½ a Gala melon, 6-8 raspberries or a small handful of mixed berries, 1 apple, peeled and cored, ½ a glass of water.

Method: Blitz all the ingredients until combined. This healthy smoothie can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for 12 hours but it's best drunk straight away.
