Four secrets to finally beating limescale
1. Keep on top of limescale
Limescale is caused when naturally occurring minerals that are diluted in water (such as calcium carbonate and magnesium) deposit around your home. As these minerals crystallise they tend to form a white crusty layer, and that’s the nasty limescale you see around your sinks, taps and shower. Limescale is pretty stubborn and the longer you leave it the more it will build up, so it’s best to stay on top of it and remove it as often as you can, to prevent having a big limescale removal job on your hands.
2. Don’t just scrub at limescale
At a push, you can remove some limescale by scrubbing. But by doing this, you’re also likely to damage the finish of your stainless steel sink or shower screen underneath. 3. Leave it to soak
If you’re keeping on top of your limescale (see tip number 1), removing any new limescale is merely a matter of spraying the affected area with limescale treatment, wiping it off with a dry or damp cloth, and finishing with a rinse with water. More stubborn areas are going to need a longer treatment. For tougher encrustations you’re going to need to leave any treatment for longer. 4. Stop your limescale coming back
