Even after you’ve cleaned the house from top to toe, musty smells can still linger.

You can try to mask them, but until you really get to the bottom of the problem and solve it at the source, you’re going to keep struggling with them.

Luckily help is at hand to snuff out those musty smells – and to find out how to get rid of other lingering odours, see our articles on beating smoky, fishy and pet smells.

1. Get to the root of the problem

2. Kill the mould

3. Banish the musty smells

4. Smells so Pure

1. Get to the root of the problem

Firstly, let’s try to find what’s causing that smell in the musty room. It might be that your furniture is just a little old but it could be something a bit more problematic, like mould.

Moisture in the air is one of the key causes of mould, and so it’s key to keep it to a minimum. Clean spillages immediately and thoroughly, and make sure your home is well ventilated by opening all window vents and using the extractor fan when showering, taking a hot bath or cooking on the stove. Try not to dry your clothes on radiators.

For problems that pose a threat to your home, such as burst pipes and cracked ceilings, be sure to seek professional help. Vacuuming regularly and keeping your house as dust-free as possible is also a good way to keep mould at bay.

2. Kill the mould

If carpets or fabric items have started to go mouldy, assess the damage. If it’s repairable, vacuum the area (making sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter) before applying diluted vinegar to the surface.

If the damage it extensive, there’s little left to do but throw it away and replace it. You also need to be prepared to wave goodbye to items such as wicker baskets and paper that have succumbed to mould.

To rid your hard surfaces of mould, grab Flash Clean and Bleach Spray. Its special formula works to battle those difficult mould stains, leaving surfaces sparkling. Use an old toothbrush to really get into those corners, and remember to rinse the surface after to remove the bleach.

3. Banish the musty smells

Even once you’ve killed the mould, the musty smell can linger and will stop your home from ever smelling fresh.

Luckily, Febreze eliminates odours, rather than just covering them up. The trick lies in the active ingredient, cyclodextrin, a doughnut-shaped molecule that locks the odour in its ring to eliminate it.

Use Febreze Fabric Refresher on your fabric sofa, curtains and your carpet, and those musty smells should be a thing of the past.

4. Smells so Pure

Once Febreze has dealt with those unpleasant odours, you can fill your home with continuous freshness with a 3Volution Air Freshener. Alternating between three lovely scents, not only will you no longer smell those musty whiffs, but you’ll get a wave of fresh fragrance every 45 minutes for up to 90 days.

Complete these steps and that musty smell will have definitely left the building!
